SompoRe’s growing scale creates new opportunities

SompoRe entered the Monte Carlo reinsurance season with greater scale, broader market reach and a clear commitment to disciplined, relationship-focused growth.

Following Sompo’s recent acquisition of Aspen, SompoRe’s gross assumed premium increases from approximately $4.5 billion to $6.4 billion. The transaction also adds a Lloyd’s platform and strengthens Sompo’s overall specialty and third-party capital capabilities, positioning SompoRe among the top 10 reinsurers globally.

According to Christian Silies, President of Europe Reinsurance, this increased clarity, capacity and purpose complement SompoRe’s measured approach and enhance its ability to partner more closely with clients. While the expanded platform provides greater flexibility and creates new opportunities, Christian emphasizes that SompoRe remains focused on thoughtful underwriting, consistency and selecting opportunities that support sustainable growth and long-term value.

Greater scale, he says, does not mean growth for growth’s sake. SompoRe continues to trade with clients in a disciplined and deliberate way, maintaining the approach that has shaped its business over many years.

Perspective

We won’t be at the forefront of any trend, we will be trading with our clients as we have done over the last years, and even longer beyond that.

President of Europe Reinsurance

A broader European platform

SompoRe’s expanded European platform brings together Sompo’s established Zurich footprint with Aspen’s strong London market relationships. The combination creates a broader and more diversified European offering, with limited overlap between the two businesses.

Christian notes that this broader platform may increase expectations from brokers and cedants, particularly as SompoRe’s enhanced scale gives it a more prominent position in the global reinsurance market. However, he says the company’s priorities remain unchanged: deepen valued client relationships, maintain underwriting discipline and pursue opportunities where SompoRe can bring meaningful expertise and capacity.

Potential growth opportunities include accident and health reinsurance, European property and casualty, and selected London casualty and specialty business. Christian also points to SompoRe’s substantial capabilities across the Middle East and Asia as part of the broader range of opportunities available to the business.

Disciplined growth in a changing market

As the risk environment continues to evolve, Christian says SompoRe is focused on being measured, reliable and deliberate. Rather than moving quickly into new areas without fully understanding the exposures, the company continues to prioritize careful risk selection, technical underwriting and long-term client alignment.

He also highlights the importance of consistency in the current market environment. With clients and brokers looking for stable, dependable partners, SompoRe’s expanded scale gives the company more ways to support its clients while remaining selective about where and how it grows.

SompoRe’s increased scale creates new possibilities, but its core priorities remain consistent: maintain underwriting discipline; strengthen client and broker relationships; and grow in a thoughtful way that stays true to SompoRe’s commitment to sustainable value creation.
