Marine Underwriter
Richard Smith joined Sompo in 2026 as a Marine Underwriter. In this role, he is responsible for underwriting Sompo’s retail marine and transport-related portfolios across the UK regions, working with brokers and clients to support a broad range of commercial risks.
Mr Smith has more than 23 years of experience in the insurance industry, with expertise in marine, cargo and transport-related underwriting.
Throughout his career, he has worked across the UK market, developing a detailed understanding of regional distribution models, broker relationships and client requirements.
Prior to joining the insurance industry, Mr Smith spent several years in the shipping sector with a global shipping line.
